- Scholarship Winner Reflects on Personal, Professional Growth Following Attendance at Annual AACUC Conference
August 17, 2023The Virginia League proudly sponsors an annual scholarship to the African American Credit Union Coalition's (AACUC) Annual Conference. The scholarship was established in honor of retired TruEnergy Federal Credit Union President/CEO Lynette Smith, a tireless credit union advocate and a champion for the credit union movement at both the state and national levels. She is a past chairwoman of the AACUC. We were pleased to award this year's Lynette Smith Scholarship to Chartway Credit Union's Melisande Corlett, who was so moved by the experience and opportunity, she's written the following post about the Annual Conference and what the networking opportunities and education sessions meant to her, personally and professionally.

Each year, the League and the Credit Union National Association sponsor four awards competitions to recognize credit unions for their work in financial education, community service and outreach, and excellence in member service.

- CUs, League Host Lawmakers, Officials at Legislative Reception in Harrisonburg
August 9, 2023Forty-five credit union advocates, lawmakers and local officials last night participated in the League's second Legislative Reception of the summer. The Harrisonburg event was hosted by UVA Community Credit Union and drew participants from CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union, DuPont Community Credit Union and Park View Federal Credit Union.

August 4, 2023Regarding the potential merger between CUNA and NAFCU, President/CEO of the Virginia Credit Union League Carrie Hunt has an interesting perspective from her current league leadership position and as a former NAFCU executive. For two years, Hunt has led the league after years inside NAFCU as the organization’s EVP of government affairs and general counsel.

- Richmond-Area Golf Tournament Raises $8,000 for VACUPAC
August 1, 2023Henrico Federal Credit Union, Richmond-area credit unions and credit union business partners presented an $8,000 check to VACUPAC this week to support Virginia credit unions' advocacy work. Henrico FCU hosts and coordinates the annual Bill Dawson VACUPAC Golf Tournament in support of the Virginia Credit Union Political Action Committee (VACUPAC), the political action committee for Virginia-based credit unions. The tournament is named in honor of the late Bill Dawson, a longtime volunteer on the Henrico FCU board of directors and a champion for state credit unions' advocacy work, including political fundraising.

July 28, 2023The U.S. Senate passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2024 Thursday night without the interchange amendment the credit union industry fought to exclude.

July 26, 2023Your League is joining CUNA and other Leagues to host two regional conferences for small credit unions in 2023. Geared toward management and board members, these low-cost events will focus on how smaller credit unions can strengthen their operations and remain competitive long into the future. Your League is pleased to offer scholarships for these events to qualifying credit unions.
