Special Election March 28 for Virginia Senate's 9th District

Authored By: Lewis Wood on 3/27/2023

Voters in the state Senate's 9th District go to the polls March 28 for a special election.

The 9th District is home to over 85,000 credit union members and includes the City of Richmond, all of Charles City County, and parts of Hanover County and Henrico County. Delegate Lamont Bagby (D) and Steve Imholt (R) are running to fill the remainder of the term of former state Sen. Jennifer McClellan (D), who won election to the U.S. House of Representatives last month and is now representing Virginia’s 4th Congressional District.

The winner of this special election will have to run again for this seat in the November General Election, where all 140 seats in the General Assembly will be up for election in newly drawn districts. Currently, 43 of the 140 races have no incumbent candidates, which means we will have a very different General Assembly come January 2024.

The Virginia Credit Union League has worked closely with Del. Bagby during his tenure at the Virginia General Assembly, where he sponsored credit union-supported legislation. If you live in the 9th Senate District, we encourage you to get and vote for the candidate of your choice!
