League Congratulates Congresswoman-Elect Jennifer McClellan on Historic Win

Unofficial results have state Sen. Jennifer McClellan winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives following Tuesday’s special election for the 4th Congressional District seat.

“Virginia’s credit unions congratulate Sen. McClellan,” said League President/CEO Carrie Hunt, “and we look forward to working with her in her new role as a member of Congress. We remain actively engaged with each member of our Congressional delegation on a host of federal issues that directly affect us and our members, including data privacy and security measures, interchange and overdraft services.”

McClellan, a 2021 gubernatorial candidate, has served in the Virginia General Assembly since 2006. During her service in the House of Delegates, she was a member of the House Commerce and Labor Committee, through which almost all the legislation related to credit unions and financial services passed.

In the current General Assembly session, the senator has been a champion for Community Development Financial Institutions, introducing SB1320 with Sen. Dave Marsden, which codifies the Virginia Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, originally created in the 2021 Appropriation Act, and establishes the Virginia Community Development Financial Institutions Program to carry out the purposes of the Fund. The measure has enjoyed broad support. Your League testified in favor of the measure when it was before the Senate’s General Laws and Technology Committee.

Your League recently hosted a virtual event with McClellan, during which the senator noted that she’s a proud member of the Virginia State University Federal Credit Union, where she received her first car loan.

She claims the seat previously held by the late-Donald McEachin, who passed away just weeks after winning another term in last November's elections.
