Michelle Singletary of The Washington Post to Kick-Off Program on Oct. 7

(Richmond, VA, September 15, 2021) – Virginia Credit Union is launching a free, multi-week, online series in October focused on financial success for women.

The program will be structured with four weekly sessions covering the whole gamut of financial topics from spending, budgeting, debt management and investing to saving for college and retirement.

Michelle Singletary, the personal finance columnist for The Washington Post, will lead the first session, “6 Steps to Become a Financial Superwoman,” on Oct. 7 from 6 p.m.–7:30 p.m.

Singletary writes the nationally syndicated personal finance column, “The Color of Money,” which appears in The Washington Post on Wednesdays and Sundays and is carried by dozens of additional newspapers nationwide. She is the author of four personal finance books including, What to Do With Your Money When Crisis Hits: A Survival Guide, and appears frequently on national radio and television networks including NPR, CNN, PBS and NBC. Singletary will offer the keynote presentation for the series.

Unlike distinct workshops, the weekly sessions in the women’s series are designed to build on each other. A financial assessment at the beginning of the program will allow participants to track their progress over time. Participants will have an opportunity to seek individual coaching around specific financial questions and concerns.

“Statistically, women live longer than men, typically earn less than men, yet are more likely to be decision-makers when it comes to money in their households. We wanted to create an opportunity focused on the unique challenges and opportunities that women face when it comes to money,” explained Cherry Dale, vice president for financial education at Virginia Credit Union.

The program has been designed to combine the best aspects of in-person instruction with the safety of online education in a time of social distancing due to COVID-19.

“Live presentations allow participants to fully engage with our presenters and ask questions from the safety of their home or office,” said Dale. “And between each weekly session, our team of financial coaches will be available to ensure participants receive the information and guidance they need.

A financial cooperative serving more than 300,000 members, Virginia Credit Union offers a variety of affordable banking services, loans, mortgages, and free financial education resources, with a focus on helping people be more confident with their finances. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA. For more information, visit www.vacu.org.
