Charlottesville, VA, September 10, 2021: A community that collaborates for the greater good of the environment is shined upon. UVA Community Credit Union is proud to partner with St. Mark Lutheran Church to fund its solar panel installation, with the support of the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP), Apex Clean Energy, and SunDay Solar.

“We are thrilled about this collaborative effort to support St. Mark Lutheran Church’s commitment to clean energy,” says Alison DeTuncq, president/CEO of UVA Community Credit Union. “As a not-for-profit member-owned cooperative, we are especially proud to help a fellow non-profit organization such as St. Mark Lutheran Church. In terms of the larger impact, this project benefits the community by contributing to a cleaner environment, supports the growth of the solar industry, and conserves higher cost energy resources.”

The solar project was designed and is being installed by SunDay Solar, a local company that has been operating in Charlottesville since 2010. The 63.7 kW solar array will offset 80% of St. Mark’s annual electricity needs and will abate more than 2,600,000 lbs. of CO2 emissions over 25 years. Chris Meyer, Executive Director of LEAP, notes that St. Mark's project is, "the largest solar project for a nonprofit the City of Charlottesville's Commercial Clean Energy Loan Program has supported to date."

It is also among the largest systems in the Commonwealth of Virginia. St. Mark Lutheran Church will hold a public blessing of its newly-installed solar array immediately following its morning service on Sunday, September 12 at approximately 10:45 a.m., located on the corner of Ivy and Alderman Roads in Charlottesville.

“We are so excited to partner with an entire team of local lenders, installers, businesses, and city officials to make our shared home more sustainable for future generations,” adds Chad Crowley, a member of St. Mark’s Mission Council and its Social Ministry Committee.
