Langley Federal Credit Union Announces Jean M. Yokum Scholarship Winners

Each spring, Langley Federal Credit Union awards the Jean M. Yokum College Scholarships to four deserving college-bound credit union members. The scholarship is named after Langley’s former president and chief executive officer, who dedicated 59 years of service to the credit union. Scholarship recipients showcase academic excellence, community involvement and the same work ethic and dedication of Ms. Yokum. Each scholarship recipient receives $5,000.

  • Nathan Geng will attend the University of Virginia to pursue a bachelor of science degree. In addition to excelling in school, Geng is very involved in his church and volunteers with several organizations, including 4H Summer Camp, Riverside Regional Medical Center and Sentara. He also participated in a mentorship program at Jefferson Lab. As an avid tennis player, he was on his high school team and ranked 2nd seed during his 9th-11th grade years.
  • Sarah Cunningham is headed to Virginia Tech in the fall to study biological sciences. Cunningham excelled both academically and athletically. She played on her school’s soccer, basketball and field hockey teams and was voted Most Athletic by the class of 2020. She served on the Student Council Association and was in four honor societies. She also volunteered throughout the community, including the Virginia Living Museum and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
  • Mykela Scott will attend Sweet Briar College to pursue a degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. In addition to many roles with her church, Scott attended the Hampton Leadership Academy, served as a volunteer for Clean the Bay and Intercoastal Clean Up events, and graduated as the first minor of the Hampton Certified Emergency Response Team.  She is very interested in art and theater and has participated in several local theater productions.
  • Skylar Haskiell performed well in the classroom and on the athletic fields. She ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track. In addition to membership in many honor societies, Haskiell served as a Student Council Association officer and as a member of the Parent Teacher Student Association. As an active member of her church’s youth group, she spent time during the summers as a volunteer with the Appalachian Service Project. She will attend the University of Virginia this fall.
