Shred Day in action and the vehicle filled with our food collection for VA Peninsula Foodbank.HAMPTON, VIRGINIA (August 3, 2021) – Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union (HRECU) has won First Place in two categories in the 2021 Social Responsibility Awards sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League (VACUL) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). First-place winners are forwarded to CUNA to compete nationally. National award winners will be announced later this year.

“It is a well-deserved recognition of HRECU’s contribution and commitment to the credit union’s community, especially during a time when support is needed the most,” stated Carrie Hunt, VACUL President/CEO.

In the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award category, HRECU won first place for their Shred Day Event that combined identity protection through document shredding while collecting food and monetary donations for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. More than 3,600 pounds of documents were shredded for recycling and more than 690 pounds of food plus $759 in monetary donations were collected on behalf of the VA Peninsula Foodbank.

Shred Day in action and the vehicle filled with our food collection for VA Peninsula Foodbank.HRECU also won first place in the Louise Herring Exceptional Member Service Award for their newly created COVID-19 Loan Payment Relief Program. The program assisted members with their loan payments; we were able to both defer payments as well as make loan payments for them which extended their due dates up to 90 days. Members had unexpectedly lost their job, or their income was suddenly reduced due to the COVID-19 shut-down of schools. The credit union serves 8 school systems on the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula.

“At HRECU we strive to exhibit empathy and compassion towards our members,” said Manager/CEO Karen Orie. “We see how hard our members work to provide for their families and we want to be a part of their solution when they need assistance.”
