Hampton, VA (June 25, 2020) – Hampton Roads-area credit unions of the Virginia Credit Union League recently presented the Garland K. Keeling Memorial Scholarships to five well deserving Greater Peninsula high school students.

Alicia Ray from Isle of Wight Academy received a $1,500 scholarship; Charles Cutler from Smithfield High School received a $1,000 scholarship; Sydney Stokes from Hampton High School received a $1,000 scholarship; Kalie Williams from Smithfield High School received a $1,000 scholarship and Farren Winter from Gloucester High School received a $1,000 scholarship.

Congratulations go out to each of these young scholars on their accomplishments. The Hampton Roads credit unions, through the Garland Keeling Scholarship, have awarded these scholarships each year to deserving and promising students. The scholarship program is funded primarily by contributions from member credit unions of the Hampton Roads Chapter, in addition to credit unions throughout the state and from individuals who knew Mr. Keeling.

About The Garland K. Keeling Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Garland K. Keeling Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Virginia Credit Union League on November 26, 1968. This scholarship program commemorates the memory of Garland King Keeling, the first full-time Managing Director of the Virginia Credit Union League.

He served as Managing Director from Oct. 1, 1949 until his death on June 26, 1967. Mr. Keeling’s life was dedicated to putting into practice the basic philosophy of the brotherhood of man. The influences of his contributions to Credit Unions throughout the state and to the Virginia Credit Union League has been felt nationwide.
